About First (Scots)

First (Scots) Presbyterian Church has a long tradition of participating in and hosting the musical community of Charleston. The 4-manual, 72-rank Ontko and Young sanctuary pipe organ [See photos and description; see stoplist.] has been hailed by many as one of the finest in the Southeastern U.S. The John Phillips harpsichord is used regularly for chamber music events. The A. B. Chase concert grand piano is also used frequently for chamber music.

The acoustical properites of the First (Scots) sanctuary are notable for their clarity and reverberance, making the sanctuary a very sought-after venue by musicians in the community. The visual beauty and serenity of this sacred space provide a wonderful environment for musical performances.

About the Congregation

Organized in 1731, First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, is a Presbyterian Church (USA) congregation whose shared ministries are intended to serve God and neighbor. Music is both a central part of its worship service and a vital part of its outreach.

Summoned by God's grace in Jesus Christ to be friends and servants to God and neighbor, and to make disciples of all nations, our mission is to glorify and enjoy God, honoring the past, serving the present, and shaping the future through shared ministries of Worship, Education, Mission, and Fellowship.

Our Senior Pastor, Daniel W. Massie, writes: "Let me extend to you a warm invitation to visit us in person for worship or for one of the many other activities in the ongoing work of this historic congregation.  Since 1731 this diverse, vital, and growing congregation has served Jesus Christ and the world beyond our walls in Christ's name. There are ample opportunities for leadership and participation."
