JeeYoon Choi is the founder and artistic director of the Bach Festival of Charleston, the Director of Music and Senior Organist at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in Charleston, and a member of the adjunct faculty of Limestone College. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Sacred Music (with distinction) from Ewha Women’s University, a Master of Music in Organ Performance (with honors) from Westminster Choir College, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Organ Performance from Boston University. She studied organ with HeeSung Kim, Stefan Engels, and James David Christie; conducting with Joseph Flummerfelt and Ann Howard Jones; and harpsichord and continuo with Peter Sykes, Christa Rakish, and Edward Parmentier.
Dr. Choi’s dissertation, "A Comprehensive Study of Sigfrid Karg-Elert's Use of Lutheran Chorale and Gregorian Chant in His Organ Music," was published in 2007. She has published further and lectured on Karg-Elert’s organ music in other prestigious venues including the Karg-Elert Archive in London, the Karg-Elert Gesellschaft conference in Leipzig, Germany, and the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in 2010. A new edition of “Introduction to Sigfrid Karg-Elert’s Organ Music” will be published by Wayne Leupold.
Dr. Choi has performed recitals throughout the United States, Korea, Hong Kong, and Europe. She won several competitions and was the recipient of the Peter B. Knock Memorial Music Award in 2004. Her experience includes teaching organ at Boston University and serving as a rehearsal pianist for the University Chorale at Boston College. She currently serves as the rehearsal pianist for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Spiritual Ensemble and is on the board of the Charleston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
